Billfish Every Month of the Year: The Salalah, Muscat and Fujairah Calendar

Cross from the Arabian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and the fishing changes completely. Different water, different depth, different fish. This is billfish country — sailfish, marlin, and the long-range trips that anglers plan their year around.

The single most useful thing to understand is that the season moves. It does not open everywhere at once. It tracks along the coast, and if you know the sequence you can find billfish somewhere in the region in almost any month of the year.

One honesty note before the calendar. The month ranges below are the consensus of what charter operators on each coast publish about their own seasons. Operators differ by a month or so either side, and every year is its own year. If your logbook says otherwise, we would like to hear it.

Salalah — mid-September to April, peaking in February

Salalah runs on its own clock, and it is the opposite of what most Gulf anglers expect: a winter fishery, not a summer one.

Operators on the Dhofar coast put the season at mid-September to the end of April, with February the month most of them single out for sailfish and the other big pelagics. December and January can be excellent or can be blown out, depending on the weather that week.

The reason it closes in summer shapes the entire coast: the khareef, the south-west monsoon that arrives around June, turns Dhofar green, and makes the water rough and largely unfishable until roughly September. Salalah's window is the long run-up to the monsoon and the recovery after it — not the monsoon itself.

Muscat — October to May

Oman's capital coast fishes best in the cooler half of the year. Operators give October to May as the productive window, with November a favourite month: settled weather, and fish feeding inshore and offshore at the same time.

Sailfish are possible off Muscat in most months, but the strong offshore fishing — yellowfin from September to May, and the sailfish and marlin that hunt alongside them — sits inside that October-to-May block. The summer months are the quiet ones here, for the same reason they are quiet in the Gulf: heat, and bait that has moved on.

Fujairah — roughly March to November, strongest June to October

The closest billfish water to Dubai and Sharjah, and the reason a lot of Gulf anglers keep a second set of gear.

Sailfish show on the East Coast for much of the year. The marlin window most Fujairah guides quote runs from around March through November, with June to October the months to plan serious attempts around rather than exploratory ones. This is the coast that carries the region through the summer, when both Omani coasts are quiet.

Its practical advantage is proximity. It is a drive, not a flight. You can leave the Gulf coast before dawn and be in blue water for the morning bite, which makes it the only billfish option in the region that works as a day trip.

Putting the calendar together

Read across the rows and the strategy writes itself. The Omani coasts carry the winter and spring; Fujairah carries the summer and autumn. There is billfish water within reach of the UAE in every month of the year — the only decision is which coast to be on.

And when Fujairah's summer peak fades in November, the kanad season on the Gulf side is already running. There is no closed season here. Only a choice.
