How to Add a Product

A simple guide for adding stock to the online shop, so every product lands in the right place on the website — automatically.

Read the top of this guide once. The rest is a look-up list you only open when you need it.

The one rule that matters most

When you add a product in Shopify, one box does almost all the work: Product type.

Setting Product type correctly puts the product on its department page and its sub-menu, on its own. You do not tag it, you do not add it to a collection — you just set the type.

But there is a catch, and it is the reason this guide exists:

So the golden rule is simple:

Jigging Reel is correct. jigging reel, Jigging Reels, Jigging Reel (double space) are all wrong, and all silently break the product.

Never invent a Product type

If nothing in this guide fits what you're adding, stop and ask. Do not make up a new Product type.

The website builds each department from a fixed list of Product type values. A value that isn't on that list matches nothing, so the product goes live, is sellable by direct link — and appears in no department at all. Nobody browsing the shop will ever find it.

Asking takes a minute. A product nobody can find can sit there for weeks.

Vendor is the manufacturer

The Vendor box holds who made itShimano, Moyes Lures, Varivas, BobMarlinGear.

It is never "Elitefishin Shop". The Brands pages are built from this field, so the shop's own name in there is wrong on a page meant to list suppliers.

If the item genuinely has no brand — an unbranded import, say — ask first so we use the same wording every time, rather than a different one on each product.

Prices always end in .00 or .50

Every price in the shop ends in a whole dirham or a half dirham — 145.00 or 145.50, never 149.99, 132.75 or 88.20.

Supplier lists do not arrive that way. Before you type a price in, round it UP to the next .00 or .50:

Supplier priceType this
145.00145.00
145.05145.50
145.50145.50
145.60146.00
88.2088.50

Every variant needs it, not just the first one. If a product has five sizes at five different prices, all five get rounded.

Adding a product — the steps

  1. In Shopify, go to Products → Add product.
  2. Fill in the Title, Description, and Media (photos) as normal.
  3. Set the Price, rounded UP to the next .00 or .50 — see Prices always end in .00 or .50 above. Do this for every variant.
  4. Find the Product type box (right-hand side, under Product organization). Type it exactly using the list in this guide. If nothing on the list fits, stop and ask — see Never invent a Product type below.
  5. Set the Vendor box to the manufacturer — Shimano, Moyes Lures, Varivas. Not "Elitefishin Shop". See Vendor is the manufacturer below.
  6. Give every variant a SKU. If a product has sizes or capacities, each one needs its own code.
  7. Lures only: in the Tags box, add the tag LURES (see the Lures section).
  8. Set Status to Active, then Save.

That's it. Within about a minute the product appears on the website, in its department and its sub-menu.

Then check it. Open the shop, go to that department's menu, click the sub-category, and confirm your product is there. If it isn't, see "It's not showing up" at the end.

The Product type list

Find your department below. Pick the line that matches what you're adding, and type the exact words on the right into the Product type box.

Lures & Baits — this one needs a tag too

Lures are the exception. As well as the Product type, every lure should have the tag LURES.

Step 2 — add the tag

In the Tags box, add LURES.

Step 3 — is it one-of-a-kind?

If this lure is a single unique piece (only one in stock, no re-order coming), also add the tag oneoff-stock. This stops the shop selling it twice.

Filters (colour, size, length, etc.)

On lures especially, the extra details a customer can filter by — colour, head shape, length, weight — come from separate boxes further down the product page (the Metafields section). Fill them in when you know them, exactly as the existing products do.

"It's not showing up" — quick checklist

Go down this list in order. Nine times out of ten it's the first one.

  1. Is the Product type spelled exactly right? Open the product, compare it letter for letter with this guide. Watch for extra spaces, capital letters and plurals (Reels vs Reel). This is the most common cause by far.
  2. Is the Status set to Active? A draft product never shows on the website.
  3. Is the Vendor the manufacturer — not "Elitefishin Shop"?
  4. Does every variant have a SKU?
  5. For a lure — did you add the LURES tag? Belt and braces now, but still worth it.
  6. Did you Save?
  7. Give it a minute. The website updates within about a minute — refresh the page.

And one that isn't about visibility, but is worth the same glance: does every price end in .00 or .50?

Then actually look. Open the shop, go to that department's menu, click the sub-category, and find your product. A product that saved cleanly can still be missing from the website — that is exactly what happened on 24 August, and nothing in Shopify warns you about it.

A few things to leave to the manager

Most products fit the list above. A few don't, and that's fine — just don't guess:

  • Don't invent a new Product type — see Never invent a Product type near the top of this guide. If nothing on the list fits, ask the manager.
  • Drinkware (tumblers, bottles, coozies), cameras/drones, and a few odd garments (jackets, belts, skirts) don't have their own department. They live on their brand's page. Leave these to the manager.
  • Rigs & rigging are added by hand (see the Terminal Tackle note above).

If anything here is unclear, or a product still won't appear after the checklist above, send the manager the product name and they'll sort it out.

Nothing matches that. Try a shorter word — hat, jig, line. If nothing in the guide fits what you are adding, do not invent a Product type — ask the shop manager.
